Roberto Petroli was born in Bari, Italy.
After hearing a recording of Hengel Gualdi on the radio, a young Roberto was immediately captivated by the sound of the clarinet
He enrolled then at the Conservatory "A. Vivaldi" in Alessandria where he studied the clarinet under the guidance of prof. R.Catto, and graduated with distinction.
He has won several national and international music competitions, and has received two scholarships that allowed him to continue his studies in Paris with Guy Deplus (first clarinet in the Opera in Paris) and in London with Antony Pay (first Clarinet of the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra in London).
A very important moment in his musical life, characterised by his love for classical music as well as jazz, has been the "real" encounter with Henghel Gualdi, who became his teacher and friend. Between the years 1988 and 1992 he played side to side to his master in his Orchestra and had the pleasure to partner with some of the jazz's greatest artists like Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan.
The years 1993 to 1997 see him as clarinettist and saxophonist in Franco Bagutti Orchestra, and 1999 to 2002 in the Orioles Band, the live music group of a popular italian television program.
He Plays Fausto Papetti's Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone in the 12 CD series "Papetti Project" with the collaboration of Fausto's son Marco Papetti.
Besides his musical activities in 1993 he dedicates his time to learn the technique of arrangement and composition under the guide of Giuseppe Parmigiani professor at the Conservatory of Piacenza. This leads him to write music for television programs as well as for theatre perfomances .
Roberto Petroli has played with many established musicians including Lucio Dalla, Maurizio Solieri, Fabio Perversi, Lorenzo Poli, Cecilia Gasdia, Fabio Concato, Eugenio Finardi, Pippo Pollina, Nicola Congiu, Paolo Alderighi.
He has recorded various LPs and CDs for different record companies such as : SONY, CARISCH, DUCK RECORDS, WETON, MAGNI DISCHI, WARNER BROS RECORDS.
Since 2008, Roberto Petroli lives in Zurich, Switzerland, with his wife Stefania Verità.
